Dutch SME-entrepreneurs play an important role in innovative activities and strengthen the economy. Especially for SME-entrepreneurs, the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs offers certain instruments in the program for SME Innovation stimulation Top-sectors (or in Dutch: MKB Innovatiestimulering Topsectoren, MIT in short). This way the SME’s can join innovative activities within the Top-sectors.
Within the MIT, the following Top-sectors are defined:
- Agri & Food
- Chemistry & Energy included Biobased
- Creative Industry
- High Tech Systems and Materials
- Life Sciences and Health
- Logistics
- Horticulture and Starting Materials
- Water
Seven instruments are defined within the MIT:
- Subsidy for networking activities
- Subsidy for support for innovation brokers
- MIT feasibility studies
- MIT knowledge vouchers
- Highly qualified personnel
- MIT R&D cooperative projects
- MIT innovation performance contracts
Depending on the sector and instrument, subsidy can be granted to SME’s or a top consortium for knowledge and innovation (Topconsortium voor Kennis en Innovatie: TKI). Within a TKI, entrepreneurs and scientists cooperate in the area of research and perform a joint search for methods on how to get innovations to the market. TKI’s are established within the framework of the Top-sector policy and execute innovation contracts.
